How many PCIe slots of what type are provided by the Gray Cylinder Mac Pro models? What Thunderbolt 2 external expansion chassis are available? Earlier Mac Pro models have industry-standard. However, the Gray Cylinder Mac Pro models have no PCIe slots at all. In the company, Apple boasts that the Cylinder Mac Pro is 'the most radical Mac ever' and refers to it as a 'reinvented' Mac for professional users. When it comes to expansion, the Cylinder Mac Pro definitely is a radical departure from professional Macs. Photo Credit: Apple, Inc.
(Left - Tower Mac Pro, Front; Right - Cylinder Mac Pro, Back) This shift from extensive internal expansion options with previous Mac Pro models to extensive external expansion options - courtesy of six Thunderbolt 2 ports - is one reason Apple was able to make the Cylinder Mac Pro so much smaller than its predecessor. Although many long-term professional Mac users, particularly those with a significant investment in internal storage and PCIe cards might prefer to stick with an older Mac Pro (at least for now), it would have been necessary for many to migrate to Thunderbolt 2-based solutions when it became time to upgrade to a Cylinder Mac Pro.
However, as of April 4, 2017, Apple has quietly acknowledged that professionals prefer a more upgradable system and are hard at work on a 'modular design' with greater expansion potential. Thunderbolt 2 External Expansion Chassis The Cylinder Mac Pro has internally upgradable and a single module, but adding PCIe cards requires one to purchase a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 expansion chassis for upgrades. External Thunderbolt 2 can be added, too. The number of Thunderbolt 2 expansion boxes available is increasing all the time, but two of potential interest are available from Sonnet Tech and site sponsor. Photo Credit: Sonnet Tech (Left) & OWC (Right) The box on the left, from Sonnet Tech, is the, which provides three PCIe slots and a built in 300 watt power supply. The box on the right, from, is the, which provides a single x16 PCIe 2.0 double width card slot at an affordable price point. For the Mercury Helios, OWC also provides a helpful instructional video that covers installation of a PCIe 2.0 card (specifically the, although the process is nearly identical for any standard PCIe card).
From watching the video, it is clear that installation is straightforward. Cylinder Mac Pro Expansion Chassis Summary Ultimately, by purchasing a Thunderbolt 2 expansion chassis it is possible - and even quite easy - to add a PCIe card or multiple PCIe cards to a Cylinder Mac Pro. However, it will be necessary for users who need PCIe expansion to calculate the cost of adding an expansion chassis to a new Cylinder Mac Pro.
Of course, for those who like PCIe expansion in one neat, if comparatively massive computer, there is no shame in preferring an older Mac Pro model, either, at least for now. Cylinder Mac Pro Expansion Chassis Purchase Options No matter which expansion chassis you purchase for your Cylinder Mac Pro, be sure to buy from a quality vendor with a good reputation in your country. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor OWC sells both the and their own Expansion Chassis. In Australia, site sponsor sells a variety of from Sonnet and OWC alike with fast, flat-rate shipping Australia-wide and a money back guarantee. In Southeast Asia, site sponsor sells a variety of, including the, with free delivery - and optional installation service - in Singapore as well as flat rate shipping to Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea.
The new Mac Pro is equipped with Intel Xeon E5 processors and up to 12 cores of processing power, so you can be sure that it can handle your heavy workload. Two workstation-class AMD FirePro GPUs, along with dedicated VRAM, help the Mac Pro muscle through the most graphics-intensive processes, including 4K video editing and 3D effects rendering. And since the Mac Pro can be connected to up to 3 4K displays, you’ll get all the screen real estate you need for multitasking. Every component on the Apple Mac Pro has been redesigned to be faster. This Apple desktop’s PCI Express-based flash storage is twice as fast as solid state drives, so boot times are practically non-existent and browsing your largest photo libraries is smoother. Six Thunderbolt 2 ports and four USB 3.0 ports boost data transfer speeds, so backing up files to external storage devices is more convenient than ever. Even as it works as hard as you do, the 2013 Mac Pro stays quiet and cool, thanks to a unified thermal core.
Through this technology, airflow throughout the Mac Pro’s chassis is improved, sparing the CPU and dual GPUs from overheating. You’ve definitely never used a desktop like this before. Do you know how frustrating it is, as a designer to work with something so powerful, and efficient and awesome but not aesthetically satisfied with this product?
I mean come on, Apple. Well, appearances aside, the Mac Pro is clearly a good choice for any multimedia professional to upgrade. It keeps your system in check, your storage sufficient and your connectivity generally ready for just about anything. I can go on for hours with this bad boy and doesn’t cough one bit. I always wondered if I should’ve bought an iMac instead but clearly, this was a more practical solution.
Apple Mac Pro Laptop Manual
Dear Apple, you’re awesome, but please do not make awesome products look like crap, GOD. Since my work for the past few years and may I say past few years since college, has a lot to do with graphics, color, rendering and all about creating creative digital outputs, I could not settle for less when it comes to device.
And I now that the perfect match for my other devices as well as to my work for me to be able to continue producing good stuff is definitely Apple’s pride and joy, Apple’s Mac Pro. I got a Mac Pro recently through MacMall online store because I believe this was the best time for me to upgrade my devices and not just simply upgrading it, upgrading my devices to the best ones for the continuity of garnering best results.
I ordered this one on MacMall and really hoping that I could get the device before my actual schedule for my next project. Good thing that this online store is really true to their word of delivering the shipment on time.
Plus, I got the device unboxed and it really works well!! Maintain that thing, MacMall and thanks a lot! Mac Pro is this cylinder thing but has been doing wonders for me and my work and yeah sure, this one’s tough! I read online that the Mac Pro was the perfect machine for those graphics heavy projects that need to get done.
And after doing some research, I came across macmall.com which offers Mac Pros at affordable prices. So I ordered one and got it a few days later.
The Mac Pro runs smoothly, smoother than my old computer actually. It really knows what it’s doing, and its processor and graphics capabilities are so sophisticated that it can handle just about any projects. But the processor and graphics power aren’t the only things that are worth mentioning. Since it’s designed for heavy duty workloads, it was built with an advanced cooling system that is the envy of others. Its cooling system comes with a fan at the bottom of the unit where it pulls air, takes it through the center of the system, cooling everything it passes and expels the hot air thru the top. The design of the entire thing is practically perfect and it fits perfectly well in any work area thanks to its size. When you do decide to get a Mac Pro, I recommend ordering from macmall.com.
It does things fast, and delivers to your doorstep in just a few short days upon placing your order online. Excellent service and excellent product, it is worth every penny. If you are wondering about the how I come up with the title above is because this simple contribution of mine about my MacMall purchase is all about my Mac Pro purchase.
If you guys wondered what a Mac Pro is (or if you are kind of too lazy to search about it though) Mac Pro is a cylinder-type buddy that best works for the tough stuff that you got. And believe you me when I say these things because it did worked for me, and it still does. I am being paid for editing videos and creating graphics for various industries, but I ain’t affiliated with a certain company, in short, I am a freelancer. That is why I have to have the best devices for me to deliver best outputs so that my grind would continue and progress. I invested for some stuff like desktop, laptop, software and other things that would be useful for my main grind. But lately, I decided to upgrade into something much better, because I noticed, maybe because my previous device already got tired of the heavy work I am doing almost 6 days a week, my previous desktop begins to slow down, that’s why I hurriedly decided to upgrade to a Mac Pro.
Got mine though from MacMall online retail store, via a client’s suggestion, and yes, I am pleased with the service as well as to how my Mac Pro is performing now, it only means that the device is not damaged. Tough grind works best with this tough cylinder, called Mac Pro. Definitely, Mac Pro that I got at MacMall via my senior co-worker’s advice is worth my savings.
This one’s almost giving and providing me more clients than I expected. This was great and it all started when I upgraded to this incredibly amazing cylinder. Apple’s robust Mac Pro. Mac Pro, I thought before was too pricy, because it was just a cylinder desktop device in itself. Little did I know that it works best and is definitely the best buy for me! I was amazed by the wonders of this device when a co-worker let me experience using his desktop at home with a Mac Pro. I did some Photoshop and After Effects freelance grind, because we are collaborating that time.
I really was not expecting that the Mac Pro is indeed for the work of the Pro. I hastily asked my co-worker if where did he get the Mac Pro in this place, he said to me that he just ordered it at MacMall. A trusted online retail store for Apple products, and I hurriedly check it out at home. Mac Pro is rockin’ my freelance work now. My outputs became better and better each day. I love how the Mac Pro works for me and this is the definitely a pro cylinder. I’m not a fan of reviews, let alone writing them.
But I have to make this special review for one special product, the Mac Pro. Buying Mac Pro is a big deal for me, considering the price and all.
But Let me tell you that this is one of those investments that I never did regret buying. Mac Pro is a super-computer. That’s it, a super-computer! It’s fast, powerful, and high-performance. It’s perfect for me since I’m working with a lot of graphics and 4K videos lately. One thing I liked about it is the Thunderbolt 2 technology. I know that I should write reviews about the processors and all that but I would like to tell you my utmost admiration to Thunderbolt 2 and its role in making 4K video editing and streaming as easy as possible.
Imagine having 20GB/s transfer rate, it’s wonderful! I’m planning to buy two more Mac Pro for my team (we’re only three, by the way) in order to increase productivity and efficiency within our group. If you’re working with graphics and videos, you sure know that rendering and streaming takes most of our time, adding to even slower response time and software usage. With Mac Pro, it’s not a problem at all.
This computer seems like it’s built for speed all along. Other than that, I have no issues with this whatsoever.
This is a great computer to invest for, and I can’t help but feel good that I finally made the switch. Once again, Apple impresses me with this amazing product. We’ve been planning to change our equipment in order to cater more projects and works. And as it turns out, Mac Pro is the best choice when you’ve decided that you want to make your switch. My team loves our Mac Pro.
And it’s been easy and breezy for us since the day we bought these darlings. Mac Pro is really, really powerful. My team and I are working with a lot with graphics-centric projects and we always have a problem with loading and rendering and lags. So imagine our joy when our Mac Pros give us nothing but faster response time and even faster software loading. What’s more, it also has huge RAM and internal storage. It’s perfect for or work. All in all, Apple wowed me with this super-computer.
My friend in the industry told me once that this is the best computer in the media world and I didn’t believed him until I laid my very hands on Mac Pro. It’s definitely the best computer out there and I’m bragging because it’s true. So for those who are starting their own graphics and video editing career, I highly recommend you all to invest on something that will help you, your skills, and of course, your portfolio. There are so many computers in the market that will promise you all the good things for your work, but based on my experience, only the Mac Pro lived up to its promise.
I’m an individual who is working in an animation company and well, accepts work outside of my work place. That is the reason why I wanted to have my buddy at work, and that is the Mac Pro. I knew for a fact that Mac Pro would improve my freelance projects when I upgrade to it because I constantly compare my outputs with Mac Pro, which is of course is provided at work and the outputs I had with my buddy device at home. Indeed, it has a lot to improve it I was to upgrade.
So finally, after months of saving up, I decided to immediately purchase a Mac Pro. Did I also mention that I’m a fan of online shopping?
So yes, I always buy gadgets from an online store because I find no hassle in just dialing the hotline or filling out an online form. For my Mac Pro, I decided to randomly browse on online sites that are not so famous yet the ones that I still found on the first page, and I saw some, and that includes MacMall. I ordered at MacMall because shipping free is free and the one who answered my call is very friendly and accommodating. And so my Mac Pro finally arrived, fresh from the box.
Thank you for rendering a very good service, from accommodating customers to the delivery. As of present, I am happily working on my stunning Mac Pro at home when doing my freelance projects. And I am really happy about the results of my work. I am a father of twins who are now in college, same course, Computer Science. They both have laptops for school but at home they wanted to have a desktop to preserve their laptop because that is their main gadget and weapon in their course.
I ask them what they wanted; they said that I better give them a Mac Pro. I immediately agreed to their suggestion because I know in my heart that they know what they are both asking for.
But because I am a parent, even though I hurriedly agreed, I kind of read about Apple’s Mac Pro, and after reading bits and pieces of information about the Mac Pro, I just quickly asked them where are we going to buy. We are not the type who shops at malls for gadgets.
My twins knew very well about online shopping when it comes to gadgets, and this time they have suggested other name, they pitched MacMall, I asked why MacMall and why not the previous shops that they said to me before, and they said they just scroll down and search and read reviews and they thought buying at MacMall is worth a try, so yes, I agreed and I ordered Mac Pros for them twins of my life. In all fairness, MacMall did well! The devices went on time as said in the conversation I had with the sales representative and when we inspected the device, it is indeed fresh from the box. Currently, my twins are having a good time using the Mac Pro and bet is it very robust.
Mac Pro will always overwhelm me. All the Apple products do.
After the launch of this darling, I see to it that I’m going to get this because I need an upgrade to my sole-proprietorship company’s computer. I actually organize events like weddings, birthdays, and so on. And our work as a team includes editing photos and putting them in the invitation layout, editing the event’s teaser and official videos, and so on.
We are using a lot of space-eating software and it actually eats a lot of time loading and rebooting computers. But Mac Pro is a whole new different computer.
It only takes seconds in loading our software. Our editing is always fast and hassle-free so we can save a lot of time. It’s pretty quiet too and definitely space-savvy which we all love because our office is as big as a box and we we can’t afford to use big machines or hardware whatsoever. Overall, Mac Pro definitely helps me and my team beat our deadline and deliver excellent outcome to our customers. So if you’re looking for a super-computer or maybe you’re working with heavy apps and software like us, then this Mac Pro will surely suit you best.
Mac Pro is incredibly one of Apple’s wittiest creations, most especially for someone like me whose world is revolving almost 24/6 in rendering, editing and heavy creative pro software. I’m working as an independent freelance artist. But I do have a bunch of projects every now and then. Maybe because of the fact that I let my clients spend less with my high-quality (as they say) outputs. You know, I don’t produce pricy outputs. That is why I am doing my very best to be resourceful but not compromising the quality of my work.
I had my iMac. But I decided that in order for me to keep my clients and to get more, I should do some upgrading. I decided to upgrade to Mac Pro. Learning from the specifications and features that I am reading online, I felt that we are a match made in heaven if we work together. Good thing I already saved up a bit and a friend recommended MacMall, because he already tried ordering and purchasing a device there, iMac per se and it works great! Plus it has this free shipping fee and the price is kind of lower, I believe compared to the other online stores. And I’m right, my hands, brain cells and Mac Pro is indeed a match made in heaven.
I really love how my works improved since I started using this incredible cylinder from Apple, that I got from MacMall. Mac Pro is not just a simple aluminum cylinder you see around. Apple’s Mac Pro is the best yet processor, most especially for the heavy duty grind that needs a partner that would keep up with the demands of the grind. Upgrading to Mac Pro is by far, one of the best choices I made with my money. This is an investment that is definitely worth it. The device works best for me and my grind.
I am a video editor by profession, and a freelance graphic designer. My work seems to be tough, yes it is, but with the right kind of device to be working with, everything would probably go on smooth sailing.
Mac Pro does the managing when I am doing my thing for it to flow smoothly, and by that I mean, rendering, transferring files and using heavy duty applications, sometimes, all at the same time without having glitches such as lag time. Another great thing about this Mac Pro that I recently purchased by for my device upgrade is that I don’t worry if it’s going to overheat of some sort, because it has a system inside it that manages the airflow.
Overall pretty good machine, fast but not as expected 8 core 64GB ram 1TB SSD dual D700 graphic cards. Lack of conventional ports Firewire sd card Reader and DVD or blurry reader burner they are essential in a workhorse like this mac. Is like having a Ferrari without wheels. Plus all the thunderbolt converters are very expensive, some cost like the all drives all together, This items should not make this mac bigger and will make a real plug and play machine. I was really excited about this mac, and disappoint me first in the delivery (place the order first week of February and got the mac in May 19 almost 4 months later) totally unacceptable, this ware my original excitement. Maverick looks buggy some how, acting slow some times. Apple needs to work in a thunderbolt base network to connect several local macs that work in a high speed network, current ethernet is ridiculous slow for the kind of data videographers move.
Apple believes when you working in video only one person will work on a project, and (I not getting in to details regarding how they destroy final cut pro 7 and the others video pro applications), but the reality is the more people gets involve in video this days, the more they will work together in one project, and is a must to share the same data, currently the network capacity and software capabilities that apple offers are not suitable for this kind of video sharing environment, especially going in the near future with 4K video etc. Overall a good machine, not what I was expected for a long 4 years they took to redesign an new model, still far from excellent.
As a Mac user since 1988 I was expecting a more complete machine. Lots of flexibility built into the design of the Mac Pro. Will be using for 4k video processing using Da Vinci Resolve. A multitude of thunderbolt ports allowing daisy chaining multiple thunderbolt drives in tandem.
Extremely quite operation and takes up less space. Fast 3.5 GHz processor. I added more ram to my computer to a total of 64GB to handle the large files and software that will be used to process them. This store is a great company with excellent customer service and quality product. I will definitely be doing business with them in the future. Decided that it was time to replaced my aging 2009 MacPro with something new.
After looking around and considering the options iMac, PC etc. I found myself really liking the new MacPro. Ordered one form MacMall and haven't looked back. Needless to say the performance is great, I'm looking forward to more and more programs taking advantage of the dual GPUs. While looks are a personal thing, I find the new design fantastic. That does lead to one small issue - you find yourself wanting 'all-black' accessories. Let's hope Apple releases black versions of the keyboard, mouse, etc.
By the way, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse work great right out-of-the-box. I'm finding the lack of internal expansion not to be an issue. To the contrary, with USB 3 and Thunderbolt, I find external devices to be an advantage. It's now easy and convenient to share hard drives and the like. I have no problem with people referring to the new MacPro as a trashcan, it's the coolest running trashcan I've ever seen. I know that the Mac Pro is aimed at graphics professionals, which I am not, but I gave into the temptation to give it a whirl anyway.
My career is teaching college courses online using various Learning Management Systems provided via Instructure (Canvas) and Labyrinth Learning (eLAB). As such I run multiple browsers with currently 34 tabs open between the two. Also open are 2 e-mail programs plus three Office 2011 apps as well as the normal iTunes, Messages, and Stickies. These I leave running 24/7 and switch between them often. When I click on anything, it results in automatic switching, no pause, no waiting, it's just there and ready to go.
This Mac Pro is beautiful, fast, and except for the fact that it's responding and displaying on my Dell 27' U2713HM (essentially 2K) monitor, I don't even know it's running. There's no heat, no fan sound, nothing.it just runs fast. The only sound comes from the AirPort Time Capsule when it spins up for a backup.
I am thrilled with this computer and am looking for a long relationship, so to speak, with it. By the way, it replaces a 17' MacBook Pro, late 2011, which was the top model with 8 GB RAM. It will replace my wife's much older MacBook Pro. Even though the MacBook Pro is fast, this Mac Pro runs circles around it! I am one satisfied customer. The new Mac Pro finally arrived 10 days ago, after a 1.5 month wait.and was on my desk, hooked up and running within 15 minutes! It is fast, it is strong, it is elegant and it is very capable.
I run 2 monitors with 4 desktops.the 4th runs Windows 8.1 under VMWare Fusion 6. Runs like a dream, without a hitch.
64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC, 2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5, AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB, it was expensive, but now I only have one box instead of the two (one for Windows). My only complaint, and it is a big one for me, is that this little box will run only 2 monitors.unless I dig deep and purchase Thunderbolt screens. I've tried all sorts of configurations, but it will only run 2 DVI's (running through a converter) OR 2 HDMI's (1 direct, 1 running through a converter), or one of each.
This is despite what their tech support guru's assured me, that you can run up to 6 monitors so long as there are only 2 of each type, and you put them on the correct ports. So, it is fantastic.almost! It’s common for desktop computers to be referred to as ’boxes,’ but that term doesn’t apply to the new Mac Pro. It’s a compact cylinder and is packed with tech. I am not a systems person. But I am impressed when I can run a session of Pro Tools, a Windows 8 virtual machine, a Linux virtual machine, and miscellaneous browsers, email, and Acrobat and Office programs, and activity monitor shows I’ve used only 20 percent of its processing power. Maybe the impression relates to my moving up from a Mac Mini to a six-core, 16G of memory, 256G SSD machine.
It does not even get warm. A slight draft of warm air comes up from the center but the casing itself is cool to the touch. The design engineers outdid themselves. Plenty of connections, including a USB 3 bus. I have two monitors connected, one through the HDMI port and the other through a DVI-to-miniport connector that plugs into a Thunderbolt port. I don’t do graphic-intensive or video work, so I can’t comment on its speed for those tasks. The one issue I had was that units shipping immediately had only 256G SSD drives.
Larger ones up to 1T can be ordered for later delivery. Migration assistant did not work because it stops if the sending machine has more files than the receiving machine can store. This meant re-installing programs, which is tedious though fast on this machine. I made more disk space by attaching a 256G external SSD through a Thunderbolt port. Blackmagic speed tests show the drive writing speed at 320Mps and it maxes out the gauge for read speed, which means it’s reading faster than 500Mps.
The internal drive is faster, of course, but this is plenty fast. I used the external drive to record four simultaneous 24/88 audio files with Pro Tools and not a hiccup. Is it worth the $4,000? Well, that’s up to individual users. I can say I am delighted by the machine. An interesting side-note is that a computer magazine tried to estimate the ’Apple tax’ in the Mac Pro by pricing what its hardware would cost if bought separately for a Windows machine. The answer: the hardware cost more than what Apple is charging, which is skewed because the Mac Pro comes as a machine and the parts would be just parts.
The ’Apple tax’ for this machine in fact is a refund to users. Thanks, Apple. We were fortunate enough to get one of the first shipping units (a big thanks to this store!!) and all I can say is WOW. We were using a 2010 Mac Pro with lots of upgrades (GTX Card, 32G Ram, 6 Core 3.33 GHZ processor and a 4-drive internal Raid 0 - it was fast, but still lagged in disk performance and I/O. The 2013 Mac Pro is a monster in the I/O department.
We also purchased a Promise Pegasus2 R4 until (8TB Raid 5). Performance is off the charts. Disk I/O using Blackmagic was in the high 300s on the old Mac Pro, the new one is 600+ on the internal SSD and about 800 on the Promise RAID. We use the new machine for video, photoshop, renders etc. Final Cut and Motion performance is 100% better, Photoshop is about 40% better and we are just getting the workstation tuned. Once the price of RAM drops, we will upgrade it to 32GB - and that should improve it further. GeekBench scores on our old, highly upgraded Mac Pro were 15,400 (very respectable for a 2010, 6-core unit) the New Mac Pro is over 20,000 The benchmark scores do not give a complete picture of just how fast this machine is.
It truly is a work of art and perhaps the fastest desktop computer ever offered for the price. In the past our Silicon Graphics and Sun workstations did not have as much power. Apple hit it OUT of the park on this one. You will not be disappointed in any way. Finally, unless you are doing extensive multi-stream video - you don’t need to buy anything over 6 cores.
Most apps only use 1-4 cores and those processors actually have BETTER single core performance than the 8 and 12 core configurations. So if you are using Photoshop more than Final Cut or Premier Pro - go with the 4 or 6 core and save the $$! I decided to use our corporate account to get the base model of the newest Mac Pro with additional configurations so I have 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, since our graphic design group is expecting to tackle a lot of projects this year. After we set up our new Mac, we tested its capabilities in streaming 4K video and we weren’t disappointed. Our 4K videos played without a hitch and there was no detectible lag at all.
FCPX, Adobe CS6 for Mac, and Adobe CCT all work smoothly, probably thanks to the dual-GPU setup. The 256GB of onboard storage just wasn’t enough for our small office’s needs, so I got an external Thunderbolt 2 RAID (Promise Pegasus2 8TB) to supplement our newest Mac Pro’s storage. Both devices seem to be working perfectly for each other.
In fact, the Mac Pro immediately detected the Pegasus2 when the RAID was plugged in, and setup was a breeze. I’ve wanted to upgrade to the newest Mac Pro ever since it was announced at the WWDC this year. One of the biggest improvements, for me, was of course the new design.
The old Mac Pro was pretty sleek, but the now it’s got none of that bulkiness. My new Mac Pro is smaller than I had anticipated but that worked out great for me because now I have more desk space. Performance-wise, this Mac is hands-down the fastest computer I’ve owned yet. I’ve just finished transferring hundreds of GBs’ worth of data from assorted MBPs and external HDs and it didn’t slow down once during the process. I was able to open up my heaviest projects on FCPX in a matter of seconds.
I didn’t even know it was possible to breeze through encoding and rendering, like the newest Mac Pro did. This Mac Pro’s got a lot of I/O ports and I like that it’s easy to swing it around for those shorter-than-average cables. The abundance of Thunderbolt ports is probably one of my most favorite things about this Mac. Six Thunderbolt ports mean that I can daisy-chain several devices to my Mac, even when I have more than one display hooked up. This is excellent for people like me who need to access more than 2 external HDs at a time. Get exclusive discounts on your favorite Apple products today! Your Biggest Source for Everything Apple!

For the Mac User who wants to or are using a Nvidia GPU, we understand that you have a lot of questions. This post is for you. We have collated as many of the most common questions we got about the Nvidia graphics cards and brought them together in a single post.
If you do have an issue that isn’t answered below, please feel free to get in touch with us. I just installed my new Nvidia XXXX graphics card, and the screen just stays black? The first thing to check is to see if you have installed the drivers for the card. Do you have them installed? No – Install the drivers Yes – Ensure you have correct drivers, full power and no hardware faults. I went to the Nvidia Website, found my graphics cards, but there is no OSX driver? All the drivers for the Nvidia cards come under the Nvidia Quadro K5000.
The drivers are not card specific but OSX version specific. Where can I find the drivers for my Nvidia Card? All the drivers for each version of OSX / MacOS can be found at the link below. How do I know what driver is the one for me? The driver is specific to the build number of the operating system you are running. Just looking for a driver for version 10.10.5 might not get you what you need.
How to reveal your OS X build number:. Click the Apple logo to the far left of the menu bar. Click ‘About this Mac.’. Click ‘Version XX.XX.X’ to reveal build number Once you have your build number, you can see exactly what driver you need. If you visit the link above you can see each version and build split with the driver available.
I have installed my Nvidia card, connected all the cables and installed the drivers but it won’t boot? Firstly, check you have installed the correct version of the driver. A common mistake is to install the latest driver and not the correct one for your build of OSX. If that doesn’t work check your card is supported in the version of OSX you are running, double check you are getting enough power to the card, and then last resort is check for faulty hardware. GTX 780Ti & GTX Titan Black require 10.9.2 or later GTX 750Ti, GTX 950, GTX 960, GTX 970, GTX 980, GTX 980Ti, and Titan X (Maxwell) Require 10.10 or later I’m trying to use Nvidia XXXX in my Mac Pro and only have one power cable connected. My machine chimes/doesn’t boot? You will need to fully power the graphics card for it to function.
Plug both auxiliary power connections into the graphics card. I have installed the CUDA drivers without any issues, but I get an error saying that the web driver is incompatible with my operating system? The driver you have downloaded is not the correct version for your build.
Please see above guide on selecting the correct driver. I have purchased a overclocked/super clocked (or other more powerful version) of Nvidia 9XX series graphics card, and my machine crashes/no longer boots?
The crashes are most likely the machine shutting itself down as the card is drawing too much power. If your system no longer boots you may have damaged something. I recommend testing the graphics card in another system to ensure that it isn’t just faulty hardware. Also, check the manufacturer specification of the card to see the TDP.
We recommend no more than a 250W TDP for Nvidia Graphics cards to be stable and fully functional. Will the Nvidia XXXX work in my Mac Pro 3,1 / 4,1 / 5,1? Most Nvidia cards will work in all three models it’s the version of OSX you are running which will make the difference. GTX 780Ti & GTX Titan Black require 10.9.2 or later GTX 750Ti, GTX 950, GTX 960, GTX 970, GTX 980, GTX 980Ti, and Titan X (Maxwell) Require 10.10 or later Will the Nvidia XXXX get enough power in my Mac Pro 3,1 / 4,1 / 5,1? Check the manufacturer specification of the card to see the TDP.
We recommend no more than a 250W TDP for Nvidia Graphics cards. Can I install a Nvidia graphics card in my Mac Pro 1,1 / 2,1? Any of the newer cards will not work as they require 10.9.2 or newer. The older systems are also 32bit not 64bit so require a GPU with a 32bit BIOS.
I’m running a Mac Pro X,X with the following CPU will I need to upgrade my CPU to fit a new graphics card? No, you do not, the only thing that matters is that your system is a 3,1 or newer and running the correct operating system for your choice of GPU. How is the power draw from the card handled?
We select specific cards which draw within the power limit of the Mac Pro. Certain graphics cards will draw too much and can only be run with an additional GPU. So when you install the Nvidia GPU how do you update the drivers when a new version of OSX comes out? You will need to swap back to the Apple GPU, update OS X, update drivers and then swap to the Nvidia GTX GPU. I have a modified Nvidia card do I still need the drivers?
Yes, you still need the drivers. The Mac EFI just gives you a boot screen. I’m not getting audio over HDMI / Display Port in my Mac Pro with the Nvidia card? Nvidia doesn’t support audio over HDMI or Display Port you will need to output via digital or 3.5mm. I have one Nvidia XXXX graphics card installed in my system I want to add another one? If you would like to install another GPU you MUST go one of these two routes: Route 1 – Get an external power supply unit to power the card Route 2 – Get an external PCI-e chassis such as the Xpander Elite from Cubix. There is not enough power inside the Mac Pro to power GPUs, and you are just asking for trouble.
We recommend the Cubix route purely as it is a much more reliable solution. Hi CreatePro, Thank you so very much for making this idiot proof guide for installing GTX cards in cMP’s!
Unfortunately I am the kind of idiot that breaks idiot proof guides! If you will take the time to hear my story and provide any suggestions/support I would be eternally grateful: I recently had an opportunity that netted me a free mac pro 5,1 (Mid-2010) and decided to upgrade the!@#$ out of it. I upgraded the CPUs to the 5960s, upgraded the RAM to 32gb, installed USB 3.0 card and (2) PCIe SSDs. Then my last hurdle was the GPU; and I have fallen and can’t get up.
I first bought a GTX 980ti off ebay, just a stock PC version. I did my research and this showed to be the card for me.
I work in 3D modeling apps like Maya/Zbrush, and I was planning on dual booting into windows so i could game. So I order the mini 6pin to 8pin cable, download latest drivers for my specific version of MacOS Sierra, install both drivers and latest CUDA, while the original Radeon is in the machine. I also set up screen sharing with my mbp just in case, because i notice that the Nvidia web drivers keeps defaulting to OSX default driver. Despite changing it in preferences/locking it. There is seemingly enough power as the lights come on and the fans spin.
I know that no boot screen will show, but after 10 mins of looking at a blank/black monitor screen i decide its not working. So i attempt to screen share in from my laptop, and it just hangs on “connecting”.
After another 10 mins I assume its a no go. Do some web research and see that the GPUs like this especially the 980ti edition, may need more power.
So i order more cables: 2x Mini6 to 8pin, and a Sata to 6pin. Just to see if its because the GTX card isn’t getting enough power. Still same result. So i think maybe the card is bad and i am about to contact the seller and cry, but before i do that, let me put it in a Win 10 PC i have. 980ti loads up no issue. Looks/works great! I had an MSI GTX 970 in the PC, and figure well this must be a lower rated card let me try this in my cMP instead.
Using either the low power/extra power set up, i get the same blank/black screen. So if you have stayed thru my story this long, Thank you! If you see anywhere I might have gone wrong or have any suggestions on what to do next, besides send it to MacVidCards or contact them, cause my piggy bank is empty and I can live without a boot screen. I am using the latest version of macOS Sierra and downloaded the latest nvidia/cuda drivers for: 10.12.4 (16E195) 367.15.10.45f01 Should I try installing El Capitan?
Should I trade the GTX 970 for an ATI RX 480? Any words of wisdom, support, troubleshooting ideas, etc.
Would be more than appreciated! Thanks for reading!!

How many PCI slots of what type are provided by the Mac Pro models? How do you install a PCIe card in the Mac Pro? All Mac Pro models support PCIe (PCI Express) cards, but the type of cards supported varies, particularly between early and later systems. The varies, too. Photo Credit: Apple, Inc. (Mac Pro) Identification Help If you're not sure which Mac Pro you have, several lines share the so this identifier is insufficient for the purpose of ensuring PCIe card compatibility. The model number is sufficient to identify the 'Early 2009,' 'Mid-2010' and 'Mid-2012' Mac Pro lines, which share the same PCIe slots.
However, each Mac Pro series can be identified uniquely externally by and 'close enough' to an exact match to determine PCIe compatibility by the in software. In turn, each model can be uniquely identified via model identifier and one or more secondary identifiers (like processor speed and/or processor type). The EMC number is located on the rear of the system in small type.
To locate the model identifier in software, select 'About This Mac' under the Apple Menu on your computer and click the 'More Info.' If the Mac Pro is running OS X 'Lion' (10.7) or later, click the 'System Report' button after clicking 'More Info.' A of the Mac Pro lines, corresponding identifiers, and PCIe compatibility is provided below. EveryMac.com's feature - as well as the - also can identify these systems by their. More details about identifiers are provided in EveryMac.com's section. Supported PCIe Card Types The original Mac Pro models have four PCIe 1.0 expansion slots with one double-wide 16-lane PCI Express slot occupied by a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT in the default configuration, and three full-length PCI Express slots open.
The 'Early 2008' Mac Pro models have two PCIe 2.0 and two PCIe 1.0 expansion slots, with one double-wide 16-lane PCIe 2.0 slot occupied by an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT in the default configuration. This leaves one 16-lane PCIe 2.0 slot and two four-lane PCIe slots open. The 'Early 2009,' 'Mid-2010,' and 'Mid-2012' Mac Pro models have four full-length PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 expansion slots, two x16 slots and two x4 slots.
In the default configurations, one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot is occupied by the graphics card. There is a 300W combined maximum for all PCI Express slots in these models as well.
